Member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey MP will host a meeting of STOP (Overhead Powerlines) Action Group members and Queensland Opposition Leader, Lawrence Springborg at 4pm on Tuesday 19th August at her Palm Beach office.
Angry residents from the STOP Action Group representing areas affected by the powerline proposal will be able to put their case to Mr Springborg and seek his support for underground lines.
Construction of 110kv powerlines through residential areas as part of the proposed Mudgeeraba to Tugun network upgrade has created enormous anxiety and uproar in the affected suburbs.
Ms Stuckey tabled a petition in State Parliament signed by almost 4000 people in June this year from residents opposing the above-ground 110Kv powerlines together with hundreds of letters to the Premier and Energy Minister.
“Thousands of residents have protested strongly against the powerlines on the grounds of health concerns, property de-valuations, visual pollution and loss of trees and vegetation,” said Ms Stuckey
“I have advocated loudly for residents to be included in a thorough consultation process and this lobbying on behalf of our local community, has resulted in the establishment of a community reference group to liaise between affected parties, Government and Energex.
“In addition, I have requested estimated costings of putting the powerlines underground through this area, as did the Shadow Minister for Mines and Energy in Estimates Committee this year.
“Disappointingly the Minister is refusing to meet with STOP members to hear their views first hand.
“By contrast, the LNP is serious about listening to the concerns of these citizens as is demonstrated by Lawrence Springborg’s attendance here today,” Ms Stuckey said.
