Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg MP will learn first-hand tomorrow afternoon the effects of the Tweed sand bypass on Kirra beach.
Currumbin MP Jann Stuckey has organised a meeting between Mr Springborg and local stakeholders at Kirra to express their frustration at deteriorating beach conditions.
The meeting is to be held at 1.30 pm Saturday, December 13 near the North Kirra SLSC.
Ms Stuckey says since the sand bypass started eight years ago several million cubic metres of sand has been pumped and has moved in a northerly drift at three times the normal rates.
“It has destroyed baitfish reefs and surf breaks, including the world famous Kirra break,” she said.
The joint bypass scheme is a partnership between the New South Wales and Queensland Governments. Ms Stuckey has been vocal on the management of the project which has allowed massive amounts of sand to turn our beaches into deserts.
“I want to show Mr Springborg what the sand bypass has done to our beaches and urge him to take on board suggestions put forward by our locals who are trying to alleviate the problem.,” she said.
“The sand build-up is continuing and it is now threatening the Alley at Currumbin as well.”
“For several years now I have tried to convince the Labor Government to save this iconic part of the State but it has fallen on deaf ears. It’s now up to the LNP to come to the rescue before more of our beautiful coastline is lost .”
