Member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey MP has used her first speech to parliament to highlight the ongoing concerns of local residents, affected by the construction of the Tugun desalination plant.
Ms Stuckey has been fighting for residents’ restoration rights and recently supported a petition for the desalination operators to fix affected houses.
“We are still waiting for the desal which has caused enormous amounts of angst. My office receives frequent calls from people who believe they have been directly affected mostly by vibrations during laying of massive water pipes through suburban streets – roads not properly restored, cracks appearing in walls, ceilings, driveways, Doors and windows dropping – they have put up with daily intrusion into their lives – they deserve better than being told they don’t have a case to answer,” said Ms Stuckey.
“They feel like they’ve been hung out to dry!
“This Government must step in and make sure these people’s properties are restored to pre-construction status. Tugun Footy Club is literally sinking and Govt has a responsibility to provide assistance.
“My Labor opponent pre-election told ABC radio that Minister Lucas had publicly guaranteed to withhold one hundred million dollars to restore people’s homes to pre-desalination construction conditions. Will this be honoured?
“Still so many unanswered questions, what is Government trying to hide? Gross mismanagement and incompetence spring to mind.
Along with damage to houses and Tugun Footy Club Ms Stuckey raised the issue of the evidence of corrosion to the desal plant and the Tugun bypass built by the Labor government to last 100 years.
“The bypass opened less than a year ago yet already Iron framework in parts of Tugun bypass tunnel are showing signs of acid corrosion.
