Member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey MP has called for improvements to the Stewart Rd intersection near the Pacific Motorway at Currumbin after a series of accidents and numerous near-misses.
Two sets of traffic lights in close proximity are causing confusion amongst motorists heading north from Tugun, who often only observe the second set, completely missing the first set which has resulted in a number of incidents.
Ms Stuckey herself was almost involved in an accident at the intersection this week when a four-wheel drive vehicle drove through a red light and failed to give way. She said the driver obviously did not see the lights directly above him that were still red and relied on those several metres in front of him to give him direction.
“This situation has happened numerous times which I have witnessed and it is with a large degree of apprehension that I continue to use this route home,” she said.
“I have also seen cars collide on two occasions and often hope I will not be the first vehicle
waiting at the lights to turn right into Stewart Road.
“My office has received a number of complaints about the confusion of two sets of traffic lights so close together. I would encourage anyone else who has had a near miss to contact my office so I can put a strong case to the department.
“As a matter of urgency, I have asked Department of Main Roads to look at the situation, either with signage or with a different light configuration,” she said.
“It is only a matter of time until there is a serious or fatal accident.”
